CAS No.: 64-18-6
Hazard Class: 8 (Corrosive)
UN No.: 1779
Appearance: Colorless fuming liquid
Description: Formic acid is produced through carbon monoxide and methanol reaction (BASF process) or as a byproduct of acetic acid manufacture, serving as a strong organic acid (pKa=3.75) with unique reducing properties. It is extensively used in leather tanning (depilation), animal feed preservation (antibacterial agent), rubber coagulation, and textile dyeing. At high concentrations (>85%), it forms corrosive vapors and exhibits both acidic and aldehyde-like reactivity.
